Transitioning to college? According to Collegedata.com, almost 30% of college freshmen surveyed reported that the rigor of academics was the most difficult part of transitioning into college, followed by the daunting task of money management.  Nearly 40% of those surveyed considered dropping out after their first year because of those two challenges.  Following the isolation of COVID, another stressor was making and maintaining new friendships.

Therapy provides a confidential space where young adults can work through stress, relationships, academic pressure, confidence, and major life transitions. Emerald Cove Counseling offers counseling to young adults with these common challenges:

  • Anxiety & stress
  • Academic burnout
  • Relationships
  • Self-esteem
  • Family issues
  • Life transitions
  • Motivation/procrastination
  • Career uncertainty
  • Social confidence
  • Adjustment to college

You can be a great support to your new college freshman using the following tips:

  1. Be available to talk when they need it.
  2. Listen – to empathize with them, not to solve their problem.
  3. Offer advice, but only if it’s asked for.
  4. Encourage your student to utilize resources, like talking with their Resident Assistant, seeking out tutoring, or contacting student services.
  5. Send a care package.
  6. Normalize mental health treatment and encourage them to seek it out.
  7. Encourage them to call or text 988 for confidential, immediate conversation.

CALL 911 if your student, or anyone else, is an immediate danger to themselves or others.

Emerald Cove Counseling offers virtual therapy appointments and will accommodate your student’s academic schedule.  Encourage them to schedule a therapy session or a psychiatric evaluation to help them manage their mental health during this transitional time.  Our therapists can help parents adjust to the transition as well!
